In 1917, the JPS published a definitive English translation of the Tanakh -- the books known as the Torah, Prophets (Nevi'im), and Writings (Kethuvim). Although these books roughly correspond to the Christian "Old Testament," there are many differences in translations. With its easy, flowing language, the JPS version is enjoyed by Jews and non-Jews alike. Jewish translations often also reflect traditional Jewish interpretations of the Bible, as opposed to the Christian understanding often reflected in non-Jewish translations.
