Description
Paul was in Corinth when he wrote Romans 1:19-32. The sins listed there were everyday sins on the streets of Corinth, displayed as much in broadest daylight as at darkest midnight. It was no small thing to be a Christian at Corinth, to spurn its wares, to live there unspotted from the world. Christianity is in no peril from the Corinths of this world, however, just so long as it stays true to its call. Christians are safe, even in Corinth, so long as they recall that their home is in heaven and that they have become citizens of another world. Christianity was designed to enable us to make our way through this world, on our way to the world to come. It is not the water outside a ship that sinks it. A ship is designed for deep waters. It is the water that gets in that imperils a ship.

That was what imperiled the Christians at Corinth. The world had come into the church. What Paul had to say about that is the subject matter of his Corinthian letters.

The John Phillips Commentary Series is designed to provide pastors, Sunday school teachers, and students of the Scripture with doctrinally sound interpretation that emphasizes the practical application of Bible truth. Working from the familiar King James Version, Dr. Phillips not only provides helpful commentary on the text, but also includes detailed outlines and numerous illustrations and quotations. Anyone wanting to explore the meaning of God's Word in greater depth - for personal spiritual growth or as a resource for preaching and teaching - will welcome the guidance and insights of this respected series.
