Heart Aflame by John Calvin is a devotional eBook devoted to daily meditations on the Psalms. The Psalms are "an anatomy of all parts of the soul," claimed Calvin because within the Psalms "the Holy Spirit has here drawn to the life all the griefs, sorrows, fears, doubts, hopes, cares, perplexities, in short, all the distracting emotions with which the minds of men are wont to be agitated." But, as Calvin notes in the eBook, Psalms is the most hopeful of all books in the Bible for "there is no other book in which there is recorded so many deliverances, nor one in which the evidences and experiences of the fatherly providence and solicitude which God exercises towards us, are celebrated with such splendor of diction." These daily readings bring Christians from their present emotional state – be it indifference, anger, fear or any of the host of feelings that plague men and women each day – "to seek all their happiness solely in Him; and…to teach true believers with their whole hearts confidently to look to Him for help in all their necessities."
John Calvin preached in Geneva, Switzerland during the Protestant Reformation. A prolific speaker and author, he wrote commentaries on most of the books in the Bible. Heart Aflame is formed from extracts from his commentary on the Psalms.
